CS373 Fall 2020: Week 10

Hey everyone! My name is Akshay Mantri, and this is my Week 10 blog post for Software Engineering.

What did you do this past week?

This past week was fantastic. I finally got some much-needed sleep, which felt amazing. I had a few interviews, all of which went very well. As far as schoolwork goes, I worked on Phase 3 of the Software Engineering project and a couple of minor assignments from other courses.

What’s in your way?

This next week will be incredibly busy and it’ll be tough to find time to relax. I’m in a good state of mind, however, and I believe next week should be perfectly fine.

What will you do next week?

Next week will be tremendously busy. First of all, I need to help my team finish Phase 3 of the Software Engineering project. I have several large assignments due next week as well. Then, I have multiple interviews, and I hope to ace them all. Registration is also next week. Finally, there are a couple of outside tasks I need to accomplish. If I stay focused throughout the week, however, I should be completely fine.

If you read it, what did you think of The Interface Segregation Principle?

The Interface Segregation Principle was an engaging read that discussed interfaces and inheritance and how to properly design interfaces and base classes. The discussion about “fat” classes was also interesting, as it forced me to think about how my group and I are choosing to manage the code for our Software Engineering project.

How was your experience with instance methods, class methods, static methods, regular expressions, and relational algebra?

The way Professor Downing explained all of these concepts was highly engaging and easy to understand. I had to step out of class for one of the lectures, but I was able to watch the lecture back later. I feel comfortable with these topics as of right now.

What made you happy this week?

There were a lot of things that made me happy this week, with sleep probably at the top of that list. I’m thrilled that my interviews went well. UT’s win over Oklahoma State was exciting as well. There was just not much that went wrong this week, which is always a cause for celebration.

What is your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My pick of the week is an extension called “JSON Formatter.” Any extension similar to it will do, but this is the one that I tried and liked. This extension is relatively self-explanatory. Whenever you open up a webpage with JSON on it, the extension formats the JSON into a highly readable format, with proper indentations and spacing. It makes finding information far easier and has been a huge help for tasks such as web scraping.
